Sierra rolls a seven … 7 Ks in three innings

Pitcher William Sierra’s team, the Washington State University Cougars returned to action after having 10 days of games postponed due to COVID-19.

While the pandemic situation is improving in the United States, there are still a large number of games being cancelled due to COVID cases.

But the long absence from competition does not seem to have affected Sierra. The 21-year-old was in splendid form last Wednesday.

Sierra (Montreal, Que.), a 2016 New York Mets draft pick by scout Claude Pelletier (Ste-Lazare, Que.), was brought into the game with two outs and runners on the corners in the third inning with the game against the University of Portland Pilots tied 3-3. The Montreal reliever promptly struck out the first batter he faced to end the inning.

Sierra was equally dominant in the fourth when he had a three-up, three-down inning and struck out two of the batters he faced. He duplicated that feat in the fifth, once again retiring the Pilots in order.

After 2 1/3 innings of work, Sierra had faced seven batters and retired them all. A member of the LaSalle Cardinals, Sierra returned to the mound for the sixth inning and hit the first batter and struck out the next two, before before taken out of the game.

The reliever allowed the runner who was Sierra’s responsibility to score, following an error and a double. But Washington State still led 5-4 and eventually won 6-4 with Sierra earning the win.

In total, Sierra pitched three innings and didn’t allow a hit or a walk and struck out seven.
